That the actor who plays the Sheriff in the Dr. Pepper Fansville series of commercials is none other than Brian Bosworth. If you’re old like me, you’ll know who he is.

I’m not old like you, but I know who The Boz is. The ESPN “30 for 30” episode on him is really good.

The one on Bo Ja ckson is my personal favorite

This is pretty much my mental image of him.

That was my reaction, too.

What a massive disappointment.

I haven’t seen that one. They’re all really well done. I really liked the one on the Raiders as well.

You mean that guy that got ran over by Bo Jackson??

I don’t think of myself as being particularly unlike you, but I have no idea who that cat might be.

I had forgotten the steroid business. I was just thinking of his massively underwhelming NFL performance.

If you followed sportsball like I do, you’d know him.

Not to be confused with Barry Bostwick.

Or Barbara Bosson.

I haven’t seen as many as I’d like, but you’re right, they’re very well done.
The bo jackson one is about how he was great, then got hurt, and disappeared, never to be seen again. And so he became a myth. The legend of Bo jackson

There’s a lot of people that fit that description.

I know nothing about football but I remember hearing the name and pictures like this

Exactly. He should have paid more attention to playing football.

I don’t know, I was watching this:

I recognize that guy. Can’t think of his name.

Gerry Lopez, surfing god and huge surprise addition to Conan.

That’s right. I am a huge fan of that first Conan movie, and Subotai was my favorite character. I looked him up once, and was surprised to learn of his surfing fame.

Oh yeah he is from my town, I once knew the story of how he ended up in that movie, I can’t find it now and I forget cuz!

While in Hawaii, and together with other shapers, Lopez started the Lightning Bolt Surfboards brand of high performance shortboards. Lopez created the simple but eye catching Lightning Bolt jag, which became extremely popular in the 1970s. (wiki)
Well, that hits me right in my 1980s.

Conan the Barbarian was directed by John Milius, who also directed Big Wednesday. So that would have to be the connection.

Sorry, not directed, wrote. Milius wrote Conan , but directed Big Wednesday .

I have an old one of his boards, he still has some version of it today. Ah yes Big Wednesday, that makes sense.

John Milius has his name on a lot of movies I know.

I figured. I save money on espn this way.

Red Dawn, Farewell to the King (Gerry too I believe), some good stuff. I happen to believe Apocalypse Now is a steaming pile of garbage though.

Just read Heart of Darkness instead. I sat through the director’s cut. There is an absolutely interminable scene where Martin Sheen’s character hangs out with a bunch of French colonials and he screws the French girl. I get it, it’s dealing with the French history in Vietnam. The scene is deathly slow. The whole film is deathly slow. It’s got some great moments, but no, I don’t think it’s a masterpiece.

I read it in High School, I could read it again. I did see the directors cut, I hadn’t seen it in a million years and I read the IMDB reviews when we were locked down. People defend it and others say its garbage haha. I watched it and it is just awful. I was also in the military and it just bugs me.

My father in law was a career Marine, Korea, Vietnam (twice), retired as a colonel. He really disliked Full Metal Jacket, particularly the first half at boot camp. He was adamant that his experiences were never like that. At the end of the day, it’s a story, not a documentary.

Yeah, I went to OCS, they got a little nuts but nothing like the movie. I have heard some crazy stories about boot back then. They aren’t allowed to hit you anymore. One guy I know said they put a guy in a garbage can and rolled him down a hill.

My brother was in the Army in the 80s. I’ve never served. It always seems to me , though, that boot camp was more of a mental challenge than a physical one. If you can put up with this level of shit, you can probably put up with just about anything. Maybe that was really the whole point of it.

Well it isn’t easy physically, we threw up a lot! But the lack of sleep sometimes and the mind fucking does get strange. At OCS they focus on individuals because officers lead. In boot they work them as a group. I know all their tricks now, they even bugged the bathrooms, I made a comment to a guy on fire watch while we were up all night and we went to sit in the bathroom for a little while. I said, man I should have become a massage therapist! Then an Lt asked me if I wanted to be one during PT the next morning!
